The garden of the lords of Hikone Castle is called Genkyu-en (玄宮園) and is very famous. Admission to the garden is included in the castle admission.

Hello CC,
Wow, you went 'all the way to Hikone' because of this post?!?
I am really glad to hear that you enjoyed it! Yes, Hikone is a delightful little town and the castle is small. The castle is very old, not a reconstruction. It always stuck me as a rather 'cute' castle.
I think the donburi that you refer to is 'oyako' don, literally means 'parent and child,' (chicken and egg). I would be interested to know the name of the restaurant.

I went to 彦根市 because of this post. The castle is small compared to the other ones I've been to. The wagashi is excellent esp. with green tea. I love the mochi "dust" on the outside. The surprise is the "free range chicken" oyaku don found in a specialty restaurant close to the castle. That is a must try!!!! The grilled chicken is TO DIE FOR.
