Dining Bar Peace – 100% Vegan in Kyoto

Dining Bar Peace (formerly Cafe Peace) 100% Vegan in Kyoto

When I first came to Japan I was almost vegetarian but then I was very corrupted by Japanese food. It is another one of the Japanese contractions that in this Buddhist country it can be very difficult, almost impossible to eat out if you are a strict vegan.

Dining Bar Peace is located near Kyoto University at Hyakumanben (intersection/neighborhood).

Dining Bar Peace serves common contemporary Japanese home cooked meals (this includes Western, Chinese and South East Asian dishes). All are vegan, rice dishes are made with organic brown rice, vegetables are organic as well. The deep-fried and grilled soymeat dishes are especially tasty.

The staff is very friendly and actively promotes the merits of vegetarianism. The restaurant is casual in atmosphere, a nice clean pan-asian ethnic decor. There is a book shelf with books to browse and read will dining. Many books are in English and on the topics of travel and vegetarianism. There is also a small bar at the back, which we did not try.

Prices are reasonable, for two we had a nice dinner (no drinks) and paid 2,000 yen.

Dining Bar Peace is located to the North West of the Hyakumanben intersection on the third floor of a nondescript building.

K. F. PakuPaku: Finding a good and authentic veg restaurant in Japan is very difficult. Dining Bar Peace is a welcome addition to the Kyoto restaurant scene! Also, this is a great place to go for lunch or dinner when visiting the Chionji Handcraft Market (知恩寺手作り市, Chionji Tedukuri Ichi) held on the 15th of every month.

K. F. PekoPeko: The ‘Yakitori’ and ‘Subuta’ were great! I want to go back and explore the menu some more. I had not had soymeat in recent years and it was great. I want to try it at home too.

Paku thinks this place is great. It is fine, I have no complaints. The soymeat, I thought was mighty tasty. But, I don’t know, somehow Dining Bar Peace fails to blow me away.

People looking for vegetarian food in Japan should search for “shojin ryori”, which is Buddhist temple food. Koyasan is most famous for this, but the web page
https://www.bento.com/kansai/kc-kyoryori.html lists three places in Kyoto (I’ve not tried any of them).
